Robert Plant concert! 24-11-2014

The concert on Monday night was amazing. Robert performed a lot of songs from his new album Lullaby And The Ceaseless Roar and I was only familiar with one of them, “Little Maggie” which he had previously performed on Later With Jools Holland. The album can be described as world music with a rock edge. The first few songs were from the album and they merged together to form a sonic wall of sound. His band is composed of two guitarists, a drummer and a folk musician from the Gambia called Juldeh Camara who plays the riti which is a six-string fiddle. A lot of Led Zeppelin classics were performed as well – “How Many More Times”, “Going To California”, “Nobody’s Fault But Mine”, “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”, “What Is And What Should Never Be” and of course “Whole Lotta Love” and “Rock & Roll”. The audience in the Olympia theatre were hugely enthusiastic and greeted every song with cheers. We were on our feet for the last three songs of the set which were a trio of Zeppelin classics – “Whole Lotta Love”, “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” and “Rock & Roll”. With such a diverse band, the Zeppelin material is given a radically different treatment. They are recognisable but given unique slants. According to one review, Robert “blew the roof off the Olympia!”
As it should be – he has been here in Dublin three times and once in Cork. A performer well worth catching live.
